All members are asked to set their privacy settings when they access their account on the Toastmasters International website. This has become a more serious concern for organizations that have members in the EU - like Toastmasters International! The GDPR requirements enacted by the EU require many protections of personal information.
Unfortunately, this has some effects that can adversely impact services to our members and clubs. I will explain in the discussion below.
BEGIN BY GOING TO YOUR PROFILE!
The first step in checking/editing your privacy settings is to go to your Profile.
Look for this link to visit your Content and Privacy settings.
Now click on the My Privacy and Contents link.
This is the page where you can change any of these five settings. I will go through all five of them and tell you why you may wish to check YES for each one.
Now Review Your Privacy Setting and Make Any Changes
Most of the communications from Toastmasters at all levels is done by email in today's world. If you do not allow email communication, then you will be seriously hindered in your progression through our educational programs. I have been in Toastmasters since long before email was even used by anyone at Toastmasters. I have never received very much email from Toastmasters International or from District 84 Toastmasters. If you do not allow email communications, then your email address will not appear on our membership roster. Each week the Toastmaster should be contacting members to confirm or fill roles in the meeting. They may use email, texts, or phone calls. Having this information missing in our membership roster makes organizing meetings very difficult!
Your mail setting determines if you will receive communication through the postal system. Since your Toastmaster Magazine comes through the mail, I would think that you would want to say Yes to this setting. If you do not say Yes, then it appears that your address will no longer be visible to the club or the district membership rosters! This would further distance you from the rest of the organization.
Third Party Setting
At first, I was going to set this at NO! Then I read the fine print and realized that doing so would interfere with how any orders of supplies and educational materials would be affected. Third party services are used to ship those items and more. I realized that I needed to set this one to Yes if I wanted to be able to receive things like this. In over 40 years, I have not had a single instance where I received any junk mail from Toastmasters International!
I know that many people are swamped with spam phone calls and texts these days. I cannot think of a single spam call or text I have ever received from Toastmasters International. I did discover just yesterday that if you do not allow the use of your phone number, then it does not appear in your listing in our membership roster! Each week the Toastmaster should be contacting members to confirm or fill roles in the meeting. They may use email, texts, or phone calls. Having this information missing in our membership roster makes organizing meetings very difficult!
Your Name on Public Reports
This one seems to raise a giant red flag, but dies it? Really? I don't think so. The public reports to which this one refers are primarily reports for districts and clubs. The district follows te progress of its clubs. The clubs follow the progress of its members. If you do not allow this line item, then you may not receive the full Toastmasters experience.
SAVE YOUR SETTINGS!
Finally, now that you have gone to the trouble of reviewing your privacy settings, make sure you SAVE your work or it will all be lost!
